Authentication and rate limits

Send your API Key with every Chat API request:

Authorization: Bearer sk-your-key

Manage keys and optional IP allowlists in API Keys. Disable or delete a compromised key immediately. Invalid, disabled, or expired keys return 401 invalid_api_key.

Each key has a requests-per-minute limit. The default is 60; account settings may override it. Requests above that limit return 429 rate_limited. Wait before retrying.

Chat creates replies synchronously. The task-based Idempotency-Key mechanism does not apply to Chat; repeating a message request can produce another reply and charge.

Responses include X-Request-Id. Include that ID when reporting an issue.
